English Name: Korean Spicy Dipping Sauce Korean Name: 쌈장 Romanized: Ssamjang Storage: Keep refrigerated once opened. Classified Under: Sauces, Seasonings, & Pastes Wikipedia Entry Ssamjang is a thick sauce made with a mixture of soybean paste, hot pepper paste, sesame oil, and sugar. It's slightly spicy, sweet, and savory, making it perfect for dipping carrot or cucumber sticks, adding to wraps, and accompanying barbecues. It's commonly eaten with lettuce wraps (Ssam). Hence this was named Ssamjang (Sauce for lettuce wraps). You can make your own Ssamjang but most Koreans buy it pre-made at the grocery store. They come in green plastic tubs (as pictured below) and are found next to the hot pepper paste and soybean paste. I recommend Haechandle brand but anything will work.
