English Name: Perilla Leaves Korean Name: 깻잎 Romanized: Kkaetnip Other Names: Sesame leaves Storage: Keep refrigerated. Keeps for a few days in the fridge. Classified Under: Fresh & Pickled Fruits & Vegetables Wikipedia Entry Perilla leaves are a commonly used ingredient in Korean cooking. In the same family as Japanese shiso, perilla leaves have a distinct flavor that adds complexity to many Korean dishes. It's most commonly used as a wrap for Korean BBQ along with lettuce and ssamjang, or put in stews like gamja tang, or kimbap (seaweed rice rolls), or even ddeokbokki (spicy rice cakes). Find them at Korean grocery stores in the produce section. You can find them unwrapped and on the stem or de-stemmed and packed. Either works fine though the ones on the stem may vary widely in size (making it less ideal for wraps).
